Lamentations 3:22-23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Some mornings you wake up already knowing it's going to be a hard one. Before you've checked a single message, the dread is back. The same weight you carried to bed is sitting on your chest again. This isn't a fresh start. It's just more of the same.
On a morning like that, expecting kindness feels naive. You didn't earn anything yesterday. You didn't sleep well. You're not hopeful. And mercy feels like something that belongs to better days than this.
But listen to what the scripture says—not as encouragement, but as fact: "His compassions never fail. They are new every morning." The word that matters is "new." Not recycled from yesterday. Not rationed based on how you performed last week. Made fresh, this morning, for this version of you—the tired one, the reluctant one, the one who almost didn't get up.
His mercy doesn't wait for you to feel ready. It arrived before you opened your eyes. The worst morning you can have is still a morning he showed up for. That's what "never fail" means. Not occasionally. Not when you deserve it. Never.
You are not consumed by what yesterday left behind. The compassion that met you today is real and it is enough—for the first hour, for the next hard thing, for getting through.
A prayer for today
Thank You that I don't have to manufacture the mercy this morning. Thank You that Your compassions were already new, already here, before my mind even started its daily race. I'm bringing You this tired heart, this sense of starting behind. And You are meeting it with a kindness that never once failed. Your great love is the barrier between me and being consumed by the worry, by the fatigue. I am held by a faithfulness that is greater than my fear. This new morning is Your gift, already handed to me. I receive it. I am carried. Amen.
