Psalm 30:5
“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
Pause here. Let your eyes soften for a second. The day's noise has faded, but maybe the night inside hasn't. You know the texture of this darkness—the kind that makes hours feel heavy and the ceiling feel close. It’s the space where worries grow louder and hope feels like a story you read about someone else.
The night can convince you it’s permanent. That this weight is your new normal, and the ache in your chest is just part of the furniture now. It makes sense that you’d believe that. When you’re in the thick of it, dawn can feel like a myth.
Listen to this, from a place that knew deep night: 'Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.' That 'may stay' is important. It’s permission for the tears. It names the reality of the long, dark watch. But it doesn’t end there. The sentence pivots on a single word: 'but.' But rejoicing comes. It doesn’t say you have to go find the morning. It says the morning arrives. It comes for you. This is the first inch of light—not the blinding noon sun, not the solved problem, not the finished journey. It’s the faint, grey hint at the horizon that proves the night is a visitor, not a resident. It’s the sliver that says the story isn’t over. His kindness lasts a lifetime; this moment of struggle doesn’t get the final word. Dawn isn’t something you manufacture. It finds you. It seeps in around the edges of your longest night, gentle and insistent, whether you feel ready for it or not.
You don’t have to believe in the whole sunrise yet. Just notice the crack in the darkness. That’s enough for now. That sliver is a promise, held out to you in the quiet. Morning will come with its own gentle strength. For this moment, let the first inch of light be the only truth you need to hold.
A prayer for today
Honestly, God, the night has felt long. I’m tired of the darkness. I’m tired of waiting for the full sunrise. But I see it—that first, thin crack of light on the horizon. You are parting the darkness, even when I can only see a sliver. I am held in this in-between, this not-yet-morning. Thank You that the dawn doesn’t depend on my strength to arrive. Thank You that Your kindness is longer than this struggle. I don’t have to manufacture the light. You are bringing it. So I’ll rest here, in the promise of that first inch. It is enough. Amen.
