Psalm 88:13

“But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.”

What if the heaviness you woke up with isn't a sign you're doing it wrong, but a sign you're human? The alarm went off, and instead of a fresh start, it felt like putting on a winter coat in July—dense, suffocating, all wrong for the season. Maybe it's a specific worry that greeted you before your eyes even opened. Maybe it's just a fog of dread with no clear edges. Your feet hit the floor, and the day already felt heavy.

That weight makes sense. It's understandable that some mornings arrive with gravity already attached, pulling your shoulders down before you've even stood up. You don't have to pretend it's light. You don't have to manufacture a sunrise in your soul when it still feels like midnight inside. This heaviness is allowed to exist. It doesn't disqualify you from the day; it just names the terrain you're walking through.

'But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. The psalmist doesn't say, 'Fix yourself, then call.' He doesn't say, 'Wait until you have hopeful words.' He says the prayer comes in the morning, in the thick of it, draped in the very heaviness you're describing. Your cry for help doesn't have to be polished or theological. It can be a groan, a sigh, the simple act of turning your head toward the light. It comes before Him. Not after you've solved it. Not once you've earned a hearing. First thing. As is.

This changes everything about the weight. It means you don't carry it alone. It means the burden isn't proof of your failure, but proof of your need—and that need has already been met. The prayer lands before Him. He receives it in the state it arrives: tangled, tired, heavy. And He holds it. He holds you. The morning's weight doesn't get to write the whole story. It's just the first sentence, and the next line is always His: 'I am here.'

So what if this heaviness isn't yours to lift? What if your only job this morning was to feel it, name it, and let it be carried? The day ahead doesn't need a version of you who has it all figured out. It just needs you, as you are, held. Is that enough to start with? Yes. It always was.

A prayer for today

Thank You for hearing the prayer that is just a groan. For receiving the cry that has no words, only weight. This small gift: my heaviness has a destination. It lands before You. I am not carrying this alone. You are holding the dread I woke up with. You are holding me in the middle of it. I don't have to fix the feeling to be welcomed. I don't have to lighten the load to be loved. I am met right here, in the un-pretty, un-fixed morning. My shoulders can drop. My breath can come easier. Not because I solved anything, but because You already have. I am held. That is the first and final truth of this day. Thank You. Amen.
