Isaiah 43:1

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

Can we name it? That old name someone gave you, or the one you gave yourself. The one that whispers 'not enough,' 'too much,' 'damaged,' 'failure.' You've worn it so long it felt like skin. You introduced yourself by it, even in the quiet of your own thoughts.

That name felt final. Its adhesive was strong, sealing a story you thought you were doomed to repeat. Believing that label was your permanent truth made a certain, painful sense. It explained the ache, defined the edges of your world.

What if the name you've been answering to was never the one that mattered? Here is the flip, the beautiful reversal written just for you: 'Do not fear, for I have rescued you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.' The voice that matters isn't the one that labeled you. It's the one that calls you. And what does He call you? Not by the old, peeling title. He calls you 'Mine.' That's the name that sticks. That's the identity with permanent adhesive. Feel it? The corner of that old label is lifting. The grip of that old story is loosening, not because you picked at it, but because a truer name is being spoken over you. A name of belonging. A name of rescue. A name that doesn't describe what you've done, but declares whose you are. You are summoned. You are known. You are His.

So the old name is losing its power to define this moment, this breath, this life. What name holds? Only the one He speaks. And He speaks yours.

A prayer for today

You have summoned me by name. That's what You said. So I'm bringing You the other names—the heavy ones, the sharp ones, the ones that feel like they're etched into my bones. The grip is loosening. I feel it. You are speaking over the noise. You are not calling me by my mess or my history. You are calling me Yours. That is the name I am learning to answer to. I am held in that name. I am safe in that name. Thank You that the label that sticks is the one You placed, with a kindness I could never earn. It doesn't peel. It holds. I am Yours. That is enough. Amen.
