Proverbs 19:21
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”
You want your life to matter, and you're terrified it doesn't. Both are true. The longing for a purpose you can point to, a legacy you can measure—it sits right beside the fear that you're just making noise, that your days are dissolving into the ether without a trace. You scan the horizon for proof, for some sign that your ripples are actually going somewhere.
Here is what stands, solid and unchanging: 'Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.' Your impact isn't a project you build with your own two hands. It's not a monument waiting for you to finally carve it. It is a current already moving in unseen waters, a course set long before you ever dipped your hand in. All your frantic planning, all your anxious measuring—it meets a purpose that was settled. It meets a kindness that doesn't depend on your sight to be real.
Your ripples move. Their destination was secured. The outcome of your existence, the weight of your being here, was never yours to manufacture or guarantee. It was given. It is held. You are not the author of the story, frantically trying to write a good ending. You are a beloved character in a story whose ending is already glorious, whose plot was woven with you in mind. The pressure to 'make your mark' evaporates. In its place is the quiet, solid ground of a purpose that prevails. It prevails over your off days. It prevails over your doubts. It prevails over every plan that fizzled and every effort that felt wasted.
So you can stop auditing your life for evidence. You can release the need to see the map. The course is set. The waters are deep and sure. Your unseen impact is, quietly and completely, already done.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the ache to matter. Naming the truer thing: Your purpose prevails. God, I bring You the hunger to see my own ripples, the fear that my life is just a series of small splashes. I confess I've believed that the outcome was mine to secure. Thank You that it isn't. Thank You that the course was set by You, not by me. My plans are here in my heart, but Your purpose—that is the current that carries everything. I am carried by it now. The weight of securing my own legacy is being lifted from my shoulders. I am held in a story whose ending is already good. I rest here, in the settled outcome. That is enough. Amen.
