Isaiah 55:10-11
“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
'What if it doesn't matter?' The whisper is back. The one that questions every prayer you've offered, every small act of kindness you put out into the world. You've been pouring yourself out — your hope, your energy, your quiet faith — and sometimes it feels like throwing seeds onto concrete. That ache is real. You're allowed to feel it.
But here is what the scripture says plainly: 'As the rain and the snow come down from heaven... so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.' Rain doesn't ask permission to water the ground. Snow doesn't check whether the soil is ready. They fall from a source beyond themselves, and the watering happens — not because the ground worked for it, but because that is what rain does.
Your prayers work the same way. Your small acts of love go out like rain from a sky you didn't build. The accomplishing is God's job, not yours. You were never in charge of the results — only the giving. The purpose gets achieved because He sent it, not because you managed it perfectly.
So you can stop auditing the soil. Your prayers are not wasted. Your small acts are not disappearing into nothing. They are caught in a process already moving, already accomplishing what God desires. The yield is secured in the sending — and the sending already happened every time you showed up.
A prayer for today
The words won't come right. I'm staring at the field of my life, and all I see is the waiting. But You see the harvest. I bring You the fear that my scattering was for nothing. I bring You the tiredness from watching for sprouts that haven't appeared. Your word is the rain and the snow. It doesn't return empty. It accomplishes what You desire. So my hope, my whispered faith, my small acts of love—they are being watered by You. The yield is already secured. The purpose is already achieved. I am not the farmer; I am the one who gets to eat the bread. Thank You. I rest here, in the certainty of a harvest I didn't plant. Amen.
