John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Friday night. The week's demands have finally stopped shouting, leaving behind a quiet hum of exhaustion. You made it to the finish line, but the race left its marks—a tightness in your shoulders, a mental list of what you didn't get to, a low-grade buzz that makes true stillness feel just out of reach.
The pressure to produce, to perform, to be endlessly 'on'—it lingers like a ghost. It makes sense. You've been operating in a world that trades in effort, that measures worth by output. So of course your system is still wired for striving, even when the calendar says you can stop.
Listen to this, a word spoken directly into that space: 'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.' This isn't a transaction. It's not a reward for a week well-managed. The world gives conditionally—'peace if you earn it, rest when you deserve it.' This is different. This is a quiet breath, already given. A presence arriving in the empty space where your striving finally falls away. It doesn't ask you to achieve a state of calm. It is the calm, meeting you in the middle of your tired, offering itself as the ground beneath your feet.
You don't have to manufacture this. You don't have to find it, curate it, or protect it. It is yours. It was given with your name on it, a kind of peace that operates outside the economy of effort. It settles in the gaps, in the pauses between thoughts, in the simple act of stopping. The noise of the world fades because this peace has a louder, deeper frequency—a resonance of 'enough' that drowns out the static of 'not yet.'
Let the clench of trying soften. Let the ghost of expectation dissolve. What remains when all that fades isn't emptiness; it's this. This settledness. This gentle knowing that you are held by something—by Someone—who gives without keeping score.
Breathe in. This peace is yours. Breathe out. You are safe inside it.
A prayer for today
I’m not sure what to ask for tonight, God. My mind is still replaying the week’s soundtrack, but my spirit is just… quiet. Empty, in a way that feels more like space than lack. So I’m bringing You this silence. The striving is falling away, and I’m left here, just breathing. Thank You that Your peace isn’t something I need to piece together from my broken fragments. It’s whole. It’s complete. And You are giving it. I am receiving it now. This quiet breath is Yours, and it is filling me. The trouble in my heart is being stilled by a presence stronger than fear. I am held in this gentle, settled calm. That is all. That is enough. Amen.
