John 14:16
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—”
You just closed the last tab. The screen went dark, and the room got quiet. In the sudden stillness, your mind is already leaping forward—to tomorrow’s first meeting, the unanswered email, the thing you forgot to buy. Of course you looked ahead. It’s what you do when the present moment feels too thin, too quiet, too empty to hold you.
It makes perfect sense. When you’re scanning the horizon for the next thing to manage or the next problem to solve, you’re going to miss what’s already here, right beside you. You weren’t built to be a full-time scout for trouble. You were built to be held.
'And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—' That’s not a suggestion—it’s an invitation with your name on it. An advocate. Not a concept to understand, but a presence. A ‘with you’ that doesn’t clock out when you close your eyes. This is the gift you missed while you were looking for a prize: a permanent companion. The peace you’ve been trying to locate on your calendar for next Tuesday? It’s not waiting there. It’s sitting with you on this couch, in this breath, in the space between one thought and the next. It doesn’t arrive after you figure everything out. It arrives because you never have to be alone while you figure anything out. This presence isn’t earned by good behavior or unlocked by perfect quiet. It’s simply given. Forever.
So let your eyes soften on the dark room. Let the mental list for tomorrow blur and fade. The advocate is already here, handling the weight you thought was yours alone to carry. Tomorrow will come with its own mercies, its own portion of enough. But for now, in this quiet that feels so empty, you are profoundly, permanently accompanied. That’s all. That’s everything.
A prayer for today
Here I am. No script. No polish. Just the habit of my mind running ahead, and the tiredness that comes with it. Thank You that I don’t have to scout the horizon for You. Thank You that the help I need isn’t a prize I chase, but a presence You’ve already given. You are with me. Right here. In this quiet. You are the advocate, speaking for me when I have no words, standing with me when I feel alone. I am accompanied. I am held in a ‘with you’ that never ends. So tonight, I stop looking. I am here, because You are here. That is my enough. Amen.
