Psalm 139:5

“You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.”

Your mind keeps running ahead to the worst version of tomorrow. The diagnosis. The layoff. The conversation that ends badly. You have lived through that disaster a dozen times tonight, and it hasn't even happened.

That is what dread does: it sends your mind out into the future, alone, to stand in the middle of the wreckage.

But listen to where the Psalmist says God is: "You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me."

Behind and before. He is in your past — the part you keep replaying. And He is already in your future — the part you keep dreading. Whatever tomorrow turns out to hold, you will not arrive there first. He is already standing in it.

That is the one thing dread always leaves out. It can show you the disaster, but it cannot show you God in it — so it shows you a future where you are alone. That future does not exist.

You don't know what is coming. But nothing that is coming will get there before He does.

A prayer for today

God, my mind has already lived through tomorrow's worst. But You are already there, in the place I'm afraid of. You are behind me and before me. There is no version of tomorrow where I am alone. I can rest now. Amen.
