Psalm 94:19
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
You have tried. You have told yourself to stop worrying. You have taken slow breaths. You have put the phone down. And the thoughts are still there — sometimes louder than before. It can feel like something is wrong with you for not being able to just settle down.
Nothing is wrong with you. You cannot force your mind quiet the same way you cannot force yourself to fall asleep. The harder you push, the more awake you get.
The Psalmist did not force his way to peace either. He was honest about where he started: anxiety that was "great." Not small, not manageable — great. Then he says: "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."
Notice what he did not say. He did not say he talked himself out of it. Something came from outside him — God's consolation — and it brought joy in. The quieting was not self-made. It was received.
You are not failing at peace. You are just looking for it in the wrong place. It is not something you produce. It is something God brings.
A prayer for today
My mind will not slow down, God. I have tried to make it stop. I cannot. So I stop trying to fix it myself. Bring Your consolation in. Amen.
