Psalm 73:23

“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.”

You want to be strong, but you're tired of holding on. You want to let go, but you're afraid of falling. Both are true, and they're fighting inside your chest right now. The grip you've kept—on control, on outcomes, on making sure everything is okay—has left your hands sore and your heart weary.

That ache in your knuckles? It makes sense. The tension in your shoulders from bracing for impact? Understandable. You've been believing that holding on tight is the only way to stay safe, that if your fingers loosen, everything you care about might slip away. It's a heavy way to live, carrying the weight of permanence in your own two hands.

Right now, in this breath, something is happening. A stronger hand is already holding yours. The promise isn't a future event; it's a present reality: 'Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.' Your grip can loosen now, not because you've mustered enough trust, but because you are already held by a secure grip that will not falter. This isn't about you finding more strength; it's about discovering the strength that has already found you. The release you crave isn't a risky leap into emptiness—it's a gentle uncurling of your fingers into a palm that was waiting all along. You are not letting go into a void. You are letting go into a hold. The security you've been straining to create for yourself is being provided for you, without your effort, without your perfect grip.

So what if your only job tonight is to notice? To feel the solid warmth of that other hand and let your own hand soften in response. The work of holding on is finished. The work of being held has already begun. Are you safe? The answer hasn't changed. Yes.

A prayer for today

My hands feel stiff, God. They’ve been clenched for so long, holding plans and fears like they were my job to carry. You see the white knuckles, the tired muscles. I am letting that fiction go. The story that says everything depends on my grip is dissolving in the quiet truth of Your hold. You are holding me by my right hand. My hand is in Yours. That’s the only fact that matters now. Thank You that my safety was never in my strength. Thank You that I am held, and so I can finally, gently, uncurl. Amen.

The Grudge You're Clutching · Holding that grudge feels like clutching a protective shield. This week, your hands are gently opened, and you feel the surprising lightness of letting go—true strength, freely given.
