Psalm 88:4
“I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.”
Before you read another word, take one breath. Just one. Feel the air move in and out. That simple act might be the only thing that feels possible right now, because everything else feels suspended. You're in the in-between, the not-yet, the waiting room of your own life. The ground beneath you doesn't feel solid, and forward motion seems like a myth someone else invented.
It's no wonder this limbo drains you. The energy it takes to just hang there, suspended in uncertainty, is a quiet tax on your soul. You feel like you're in a pit, as the psalmist says—'I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.' That's the raw, honest prayer of someone who knows what it is to be stuck. There's no quick fix in that verse. No immediate rescue. Just the naming of the reality: strength is gone. You are seen in that exact place.
Here is the gift, found right there in the act of naming: you are not alone in the pit. The very fact that this cry was written down, preserved, and given to you means your feeling of suspension is completely valid. It has been felt before. It is known. And in the knowing, there is a strange kind of company. You are not being judged for your lack of strength; you are being met in it. The suspension isn't a sign of your failure. It's simply the landscape you're in right now, and landscapes change. The pit is not your permanent address. It is a moment in the story, a chapter where the main character runs out of steam, and the narrative doesn't end there. It pauses, breathes, and waits for the next turn. Your strength is gone, but you are not. Your hope is dim, but you are still here, breathing. That is the quiet, patient truth that strengthens you now: presence persists even when power feels absent.
Let that settle. No response needed.
A prayer for today
Into Your hands, I place this suspension. All of it. The not-knowing. The drained feeling. The sense of being in a pit with no visible way out. I am like one without strength. You already know that. I'm not bringing You solutions or renewed energy. I'm just bringing the honest, weary reality of this limbo. Thank You that my weakness isn't a surprise to You. Thank You that the pit is not a place You avoid. You are here, in the in-between, with me. My lack is being held by Your fullness. My silence is being met by Your presence. I am companioned, even here. Especially here. That is enough for now. Amen.
