Jeremiah 17:8
“They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
We've all had those seasons. The ground feels shaky, like you're standing on sand that shifts with every new worry or unexpected change. You look at your life and wonder if you're planted in the right place, or if you're even planted at all. The wind picks up, and you brace yourself, trying to hold steady through the force of it.
Maybe the heat has been intense lately—a drought of energy, a scarcity of hope. Your leaves feel brittle, not green. You're calculating your reserves, wondering if you have enough to make it through. This isn't about failing; it's the honest weariness of living in a world that feels unstable.
So here is the picture, painted for you centuries ago: a tree planted by the water. Its roots don't have to search frantically for a source. They are already there, settled deep into the bank of a steady stream. The promise isn't that the heat won't come. It's that when it does, this tree doesn't fear. Its leaves stay green. It doesn't worry in a drought. It never fails to bear fruit. This isn't a metaphor about your effort to dig deeper. It's a declaration about your position. You are already that tree. Your place by the water—your place in a love that will not let you go—is secure. It was settled before you ever felt the first tremor. The stability you're longing for isn't a destination you need to reach. It's the ground beneath you right now, the stream that has been feeding your roots all along. You are planted. Not by your own striving, but by a kindness that chose the spot for you, in rich soil by endless water.
This moment. This breath. This is where you belong—rooted, held, supplied. The wind can blow. You are not moving. You are home.
A prayer for today
Naming it: instability. The feeling that the floor could give way. Naming the truer thing: You are the stream. You are the soil. I am not a sapling trying to grow on my own. I am a tree already planted by Your water. My roots are sunk into a kindness I did not earn. The heat comes, the drought threatens, but You are the source that does not run dry. Thank You that my place is secure because You secured it. I am held in this ground. My leaves are green because You make them so. I bear fruit because You are the life in me. No more bracing. No more fearing. I am here, and You are here. That is the unshakable truth. Amen.
Standing, Not Just Surviving · Life feels unstable, like ground that keeps shifting beneath your feet. Here, you are offered a firmer foundation—a love that holds you steady, so you can finally stand.
