1 John 3:1
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
Notice the tightness in your chest. The shallow breath you've been holding all day. Your body is carrying a story you keep telling yourself: that love is waiting on the other side of a better, cleaner version of you.
That story is wrong. Not someday — right now.
'See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!' John doesn't say that's what we might become, or what we'll be once we get our act together. He says that is what we are. Present tense. Today. With the unfinished parts, the doubts, the fragile places you've been hiding all week.
The word 'child' isn't a graduation certificate. It's your name right now. You don't grow into it — you already have it. God calls you His, and that calling landed the moment He lavished this love on you, not the moment you felt worthy of it.
You are His child tonight. That's not a promise for later. That's the fact you can exhale into.
A prayer for today
God, my breath has been shallow. I keep waiting for a verdict that's already been given. Thank You that I am Your child right now — not once I'm better, not once I've sorted myself out. You lavished this love on me while my hands were still empty. The title is mine, not because I earned it, but because You said so. I receive that tonight. I am Yours. Amen.
