Isaiah 64:8
“Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
You just looked at your life again. The parts that feel messy, the edges that aren't finished, the colors that seem to clash. It doesn't look like a masterpiece from where you're standing. It looks like a work-in-progress that got interrupted, a canvas you're not sure how to complete. And in that glance, the old doubt whispers: can you really be loved like this? So unfinished. So far from perfect.
That feeling makes sense. The desire for everything to be tidy, resolved, and beautiful is a human one. Believing that love is reserved for the polished version of you is an understandable lie. You're looking at the brushstrokes you call mistakes, the sections that feel like failures. The weight of 'not there yet' is real.
Picture this: you are standing in a studio, but you are not the artist holding the brush. You are the canvas itself. And the Artist—the One who formed you—isn't staring in disappointment at the unfinished sections. He's gazing at the whole piece with the deep affection of a creator for his work. 'Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.' This isn't a statement about your final form. It's a declaration about your current, beloved state. You are, right now, the work of His hand. The incomplete parts, the messy textures, the layers still being applied—they are all held within that truth. The Potter cherishes the clay as He shapes it. The masterpiece isn't the distant, finished product you imagine. The masterpiece is the sacred process of being held and formed, exactly as you are.
You don't have to become a different canvas to be cherished. The love isn't waiting for you on the other side of 'fixed.' It's meeting you here, in the middle of the mess, seeing the beauty in the becoming. The brushstrokes you worry about? They're part of the story He's telling. Is this incomplete state enough to be loved? The Artist's gaze, full of kindness, is the only answer you need. Yes.
A prayer for today
God, if I'm being real, this unfinished feeling is heavy. I see the gaps and the smudges in my own story. I don't feel like a masterpiece. I feel like a draft. But here I am, bringing this half-painted canvas to You. Thank You that I don't have to pretend it's complete. Thank You that Your love isn't a reward for a finished product. You are the Potter. I am the clay, still on the wheel. I am held in Your hands, and that is the safest place for something—for someone—still being shaped. I am Your work. That is my name tonight. Let that truth settle deeper than my doubt. I rest here, in the middle of the making. Amen.
