Romans 8:38-39
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Your phone screen is dark. You’ve been staring at it, but you’re not really seeing anything. The questions are louder than the answers tonight. What if I’m wrong? What if I’m not enough? What if this whole thing is just… a story? The doubt doesn’t feel like a lack of faith. It feels like honesty. And maybe that’s the point.
Doubt isn’t a wall that keeps love out. It’s the very room where love walks in and sits down beside you. You don’t have to clean up your uncertainty to be qualified for kindness. The connection offered to you isn’t based on the strength of your grip, but on the unbreakable nature of the hand holding yours.
Listen to this, written for nights exactly like this one: 'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.'
Read that list again. Nothing in life. Nothing in death. Nothing you fear in the future. No power, no depth of your own confusion, no height of your anxiety. Not even your doubt—especially not your doubt—makes the cut. It’s not on the list of things powerful enough to break this. The love that finds you isn’t waiting for you on the other side of your certainty. It’s arriving in the uncertainty itself, handed to you right there in the middle of the not-knowing. This isn’t a fragile thread that snaps when you question it. It’s an unbreakable connection, anchored in a promise that doesn’t depend on your ability to always believe it perfectly.
So the doubt can just… be. It doesn’t have to be solved tonight. It doesn’t change your position. You are held. You are loved. The connection remains, solid and sure, whether you feel it or not.
Let that settle. No response needed.
A prayer for today
To You, I bring the parts of me that aren’t sure. The questions that don’t have neat endings. The heart that feels more unconvinced than faithful tonight. You already know the script running in my head. The ‘what ifs’ and the ‘but hows.’ I’m not hiding them. I’m placing them here, in Your hands. Thank You that my uncertainty isn’t news to You. Thank You that Your kindness isn’t a reward for my correct answers. Your promise is the active thing—holding me, surrounding me, sealing me in a love that my doubt cannot touch. I am anchored. Not because I built a perfect anchor, but because You are the unbreakable ground. That is enough. I am enough, here in the not-knowing. Amen.
