Psalm 27:10

“Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.”

Can we be honest about the empty chairs? The one at the dinner table. The passenger seat in the car. The space on the couch where someone used to sit. You notice them. The silence they hold is louder than any noise. It’s the physical shape of an absence, and it whispers a terrifying question: what if more chairs empty out? What if the love you count on decides to leave?

That fear makes perfect sense. It’s not a sign of weak faith; it’s the evidence of a heart that knows how to love deeply. The worry that love might leave is the shadow cast by something precious. You’re not crazy for feeling the chill of that shadow. The ache of watching someone go is a real, heavy weight.

So here is the reversal, written for you centuries ago: 'Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.' Did you catch it? The worst-case scenario—the most foundational human bonds breaking—is named right there. The fear you’re carrying isn’t a surprise. It’s already been spoken into the room. And the answer isn’t a maybe. It’s a 'will.' The LORD *will* receive you. Not 'might consider it.' Not 'will if you behave.' Will. Receive. This is the promise that meets your specific fear of empty chairs: there is a chair that cannot be taken away. There is a presence that defines itself by staying. Your belonging isn’t contingent on someone else’s choice to stay or go. It’s secured by a choice that was made for you, to hold you, to receive you exactly as you are—aching, worried, and all.

Right now, in this breath, you are received. The chair is pulled out for you. The space is saved. Your name is on the place card, and it’s not written in pencil. This moment, this truth, is your anchor. You are not forsaken. You are held. Always.

A prayer for today

To You, I bring the empty chairs. The spaces that echo with what’s missing. I’m naming the quiet fear that more could leave. You already know this ache. You named it in Your own words: fathers, mothers, forsaking. You aren’t scared of my what-ifs. You meet them with a stronger promise: You will receive me. So here I am, received. I am held in a belonging that doesn’t have a back door. My place at Your table isn’t conditional. It’s just… mine. Thank You for the chair that stays. For the love that defines itself by never leaving. I rest here, in this secured space. That is enough. Amen.
