Ephesians 2:13

“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

You feel like you're on the outside looking in, but you also feel like you're supposed to be the one hosting. Both are true. The ache to belong is real, and so is the pressure to make everyone else feel like they do. You scan the room of your own life, wondering if you've earned your spot at the table, if you're welcome to stay.

That pressure to perform for your place? It makes sense. The world often feels like a series of velvet ropes and guest lists. You've been believing that belonging is something you secure, a status you maintain through enough right words and helpful actions.

The thing you're afraid of? That you're still on the wrong side of the door, that your welcome is conditional. 'But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near.' Did you catch the verb tense? It's not 'you might be brought near if you try.' It's not 'you will be brought near when you figure it out.' It's 'have been brought near.' Past tense. Completed action. The threshold wasn't a line you had to tiptoe over; it was crossed for you. The door wasn't a barrier you had to knock down; it was opened from the inside. You are already in the home. Not in the foyer, waiting for inspection. Not in the guest room, on temporary allowance. You are inside. The belonging you are searching for isn't a destination ahead of you—it's the ground beneath your feet. You are not approaching a house; you are already within its walls. The warmth, the safety, the 'you can stay'—it's not an offer pending your response. It is the settled, permanent reality of your address. Your name isn't on a list at the door; it's written on the foundation. You belong. Not because of your impeccable manners or your helpful contributions, but because you were carried over the threshold. The work of bringing you in is finished. The lock was broken from the outside, not picked from within.

Let that truth be the floor you stand on. The ceiling over your head. The walls that hold you. You are home.

Nothing more to say. Just this: you're loved.

A prayer for today

Belonging. That's the ache. You already know the shape of it, God. I keep checking for my name on the list, wondering if I'm guest or family. I bring my resume of efforts, my apologies for the mess. Thank You that the list is gone. The door is just... open. You aren't waiting for me to arrive correctly. You have already brought me in. The crossing is done. The welcome is permanent. I am inside. I am home. Not because I found the key, but because You carried me over. My address is settled. My place is secure. I rest here. Amen.
