Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

You just closed the news app or put down the phone. The screen goes dark, but the feeling doesn't. That thing you're hoping for—the change, the answer, the break—it still feels like something out there. A distant point on the horizon you're supposed to walk toward, but your feet are tired. The weight of wishing is honestly here, sitting right in the center of your chest.

Of course it feels like that. When you're carrying the ache of 'not yet,' hope can seem like a destination you haven't earned the ticket to reach. It makes perfect sense that your shoulders feel this way, that your breath comes a little shallow. You're not doing it wrong. This is what it feels like to hold a longing in a world that's often heavy.

Now picture this: the God you're talking to isn't the distant point on the horizon. He's not the wish. He's the source. The scripture says, 'May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.' Read that again slowly. The God *of* hope. Hope isn't a place you get to; it's a Person who comes to you. The filling isn't something you achieve by straining toward it. It's something you receive as you simply lean back into trust. The overflow isn't your job to manufacture. It's the natural result of a power that isn't yours—the Holy Spirit's work in you.

So the weight you're carrying? You're not meant to shoulder it alone on a long journey. You're invited to set it down right here and be filled instead. Joy and peace aren't rewards for arriving; they're gifts for showing up exactly as you are—weary, wishing, and waiting. The overflow of hope happens not by your effort, but by a kindness that seeks you out. Tonight, let that truth settle. The source of all hope is closer than your next breath, already filling the spaces your worry left empty.

Go gently into this night. You are held by the God who is hope itself.

A prayer for today

Here I am. No script. No polish. Just the weight of this wish I've been carrying. It feels so heavy and so far away. I'm naming it: the longing, the 'not yet,' the tired hope. You see it all. You are the God of hope. That means You are the source, not the finish line I can't reach. I am being filled right now—with a joy I didn't muster, a peace I didn't create. My trust is a small, tired thing, and You are meeting it with Your boundless power. Thank You that the overflow isn't my job. It's Yours. The Holy Spirit is doing what I cannot: turning this weary wish into a steady, overflowing stream. I rest here, in the truth that hope is a Person, and that Person is You. I am held. That is enough. Amen.
