Psalm 38:9

“All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.”

Even in your prayers, you edit yourself. You reach for the faithful-sounding words, the hopeful tone, the version of you that seems worthy of being heard. You do it so automatically you might not even notice anymore.

But the psalm says this: "All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you." God already sees what you are carefully not saying. The sighing. The longing beneath the words. The gap between the face you show on Sunday and the one you carry into Monday.

He sees all of it. And He stays.

That is the part that is hard to believe. Not that God knows — you probably knew that already. But that knowing everything, He doesn’t pull back. The mask was never fooling Him, and it never made you safer with Him. You put it on because you were trying to survive, and there is nothing wrong with that. But you don’t need it here. With God, the real you — tired, doubting, quietly desperate — is the one He is actually with.

A prayer for today

I am tired of the act. I drop the mask. Here is my sigh. Here is my longing. Love me as I am. Amen.
