Luke 6:35

“"But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked."”

'Not enough.' That voice again. The one that keeps a running tally in your head. It's the accountant of your soul, meticulously recording every kindness you gave but didn't receive back, every bit of good you did that went unnoticed. The columns are never balanced. You're always in the red, owing more than you've been given. The weight of that ledger—the need to make it all even, to prove your worth through a perfect balance sheet—is a familiar ache in your hands.

That feeling of being perpetually behind? It makes sense. You've been taught that love is a transaction, that goodness must be repaid to count. You've believed that your value is the sum of your credits, and if the math doesn't work out, you're the one who failed. The pressure to be the perfect accountant of your own heart is exhausting.

The thing you're afraid of? That this unbalanced ledger defines you. That you are the sum of your deficits. But listen to this: 'He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.' Did you catch that? The kindness of God—the source of all real kindness—isn't a balanced transaction. It's poured out on the undeserving, on those who can't pay it back. Your heavenly parent isn't running a ledger. There are no columns to balance, no debts to collect. The system you've been trying to operate within? It was never real. The role of accountant—the one who must track every give and take—is finished. You can let the heavy book fall from your hands. It was never yours to carry.

When the ledger hits the ground, something else happens. Your hands are empty. Open. Ready to receive a kindness that asks for nothing in return. Ready to give from that overflow, not from a place of scarcity, keeping score. You are a child of the Most High. Not because you balanced the books, but because you are loved by the One who threw the books away. Your identity isn't found in what you've earned, but in whose you are. The need to prove, to earn, to tally—it drops away. You are simply, wholly, loved.

Go gently into this night. The accounting is done, and you were never in charge of it. Your hands are free.

A prayer for today

My hands feel so tired, God. Tired from clutching, from calculating, from trying to hold everything in balance. I’m bringing You the phantom weight of that ledger. You are the One who is kind to the ungrateful. You are the One who gives without demanding repayment. So I am not the accountant anymore. That role is gone. The books are falling, and You are catching them. I am held in a kindness that doesn’t keep score. My hands are opening now. Empty. Yours to fill. Thank You. That’s enough. Amen.
