Matthew 6:3-4
“"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."”
Friday afternoon. You're adding up what you gave this week — your time, your patience, a kindness that nobody seemed to notice. Part of you is waiting. Waiting for a thank-you, a sign that it mattered, some invisible repayment. That waiting makes sense. We live in a world where every favor has a price tag.
But Jesus describes giving in a way that stops the tally before it starts: "Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing." That is not a rule to follow. It is a picture of a person so free that they do not even keep score on themselves. They give, and the act is already complete.
Who sees it, then? "Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." God is the witness. The return does not come from the person you helped — it comes from the One who watched the whole thing. That means your kindness was never lost. It was received the moment you gave it.
You can give without waiting for the receipt. Not because you are unusually selfless, but because someone else is already keeping the only record that counts.
A prayer for today
I keep mental track, God. I note what I gave and listen for what comes back. I am tired of that kind of giving. Thank You that You see everything done in secret. Thank You that the return is not up to the person I helped — it is up to You. That takes the weight off. My hands are opening now. Not because I forced them, but because Yours are holding them steady. That is enough. Amen.
