Proverbs 19:17
“"Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done."”
Notice the weight in your chest. That quiet, hopeful ache. It’s the part of you that gave—your time, your attention, your kindness—and now waits. It listens for a 'thank you' that hasn’t come. It watches for a change that hasn’t happened. Your expectant heart is holding its breath, wondering if the goodness you poured out will ever pour back in.
That waiting is a heavy weight to carry. It makes perfect sense. You extended yourself, and a part of you naturally hopes for a return. For something to click into place, for the ledger to feel balanced. It’s not greedy; it’s human. To give and then to hope is a vulnerable, beautiful thing.
Picture this: you don’t give into a void. Your kindness isn’t lost in the ether, hoping to bump into some gratitude. There’s a different ledger, one you can’t see. The ancient wisdom says it plainly: 'Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD.' Let that settle. When you gave, you weren’t just giving to a person or a situation. You were placing something precious into the hands of God Himself. It was a loan to the One who owns everything.
And the promise attached isn’t a maybe. 'He will reward them for what they have done.' This isn’t about earning; it’s about a guaranteed return from the most reliable source in the universe. The reward isn’t necessarily the applause you imagined or the specific outcome you pictured. It’s deeper. It’s the kind of return that fills the hollow places in your expectant heart—a sense of being seen, of your effort mattering on a cosmic scale, of your kindness being held and honored by Love itself.
The weight you feel? It can be set down. Not because you stop caring, but because the transaction is complete in a way you couldn’t complete it. You gave. God received. The return is His promise to handle. Your part was the open hand. His part is the sure reward.
Feel that? A slight loosening in your chest. That’s the weight of expectation being lifted, not by you, but by a promise that was signed before you even began. Your expectant heart can rest now. It’s been heard. It’s been accounted for. You are free to give, simply to give.
A prayer for today
Thank You that my kindness isn’t a transaction with the world. Thank You that when I give, it lands in Your hands. I’m bringing You the heavy ledger I’ve been carrying—the one where I mark what I gave and what I hoped to get back. It’s exhausting. You are receiving that ledger from me. You are closing the book I’ve been straining to balance. The reward You promise isn’t one I have to track or chase. It’s coming from You, and that is enough. My expectant heart is resting now. I am held in the certainty of Your return. I am free. Amen.
