Romans 11:35

“"Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?"”

The light from your phone is the only thing glowing in the room. Your thumb keeps moving, but you're not really scrolling. You're running a mental scorecard—favors given, kindnesses offered, effort spent. And somewhere underneath it all, a quiet question: does any of this matter? Does God notice what I've put in?

That feeling makes sense. We live in a world that runs on give-and-take. Of course part of you wonders if heaven keeps score too.

But then comes this question from Romans 11:35, asked not to shame but to free you: "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?" Let that land. You can't put God in your debt. Not because your giving doesn't matter—it does—but because the relationship was never built on a balance sheet. It was built on something you didn't earn in the first place.

That means the scorecard in your mind is solving the wrong problem. God doesn't owe you. And here's the relief in that: you don't owe God either. This isn't a transaction anyone is trying to win. Your giving was never a deposit you could withdraw later. It was always just love—and love was always coming back to you from a source far bigger than any tally you could keep.

Your open, empty hands are not a sign of being owed. They're the posture of someone already receiving.

A prayer for today

Weary. Weary of keeping track. God, I’m bringing You the mental ledger—all the tallies of what I think I’m owed, all the silent expectations that leave me feeling short-changed. I’m tired of being my own bookkeeper. Thank You that with You, the math never mattered. Thank You that I can’t give You something that puts You in my debt. That truth is a key, turning in a lock I’ve been clutching. The scorecard is in Your hands now. The columns of ‘given’ and ‘received’ are being wiped clean by a kindness I could never calculate. I am not keeping score anymore. You are holding the totals, and You’ve written ‘paid in full’ over every line. My hands are open. Empty. Ready. That is enough. Amen.
