Psalm 46:10
“He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'”
You just closed the laptop. Or put the phone face-down on the couch. The screen went dark, and in its place, there's just... the quiet. The empty space where striving lived all day. And maybe, in that quiet, a whisper: "What if you're missing it? What if wonder is for other people, the ones who have time to look?"
The pressure to manufacture awe—to find the spectacular, to earn the moment of peace—it's a heavy kind of homework. It makes stillness feel like one more item on a list you're already failing. What if the very effort to know keeps you from knowing?
'Be still, and know that I am God.'
Read that again, but slower. This isn't a command to try harder to be quiet. It's not a spiritual task labeled 'Step 1: Stillness, Step 2: Knowledge.' It's an unveiling. The stillness isn't a blank space you have to create; it's a holding that already exists. You are already held in it. Right now. The knowing isn't a fact you must research; it's a quiet certainty that arrives, like dawn, without your help. Wonder isn't a destination on a map you have to navigate to. It's the presence that has been navigating to you all along.
The striving can stop. Not because you finally succeeded, but because it was never required. The door was never locked. The gift wasn't waiting for you to find the wrapping paper. You are known in the middle of your not-knowing. You are held in the middle of your restlessness. The wonder is in the holding itself. In the truth that you don't have to grasp for God because God is already grasping you, in this exact, unspectacular, tired moment.
So let the question of whether you're doing it right dissolve. Let the search party stand down. There is nothing to chase. Only a presence to be met, right where you are.
Breathe in. You are held in a stillness that asks for nothing. Breathe out. A quiet knowing takes over. Done.
A prayer for today
What a relief that wonder isn't my job to produce. Thank You that it arrives, like light, without my permission or effort. I'm bringing You the tired search—the feeling that I should be feeling more, seeing more, knowing more. You receive it all. And You replace it with a simpler truth: You are here. I am here. That is the whole story. You are holding me in a quiet that needs no guarding. You are the stillness itself, wrapping around my noise. I am known, without having to explain myself. I am met, without having to arrive anywhere. So tonight, I stop reaching. I am reached for. I am found. That is the wonder. Amen.
