Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
What if the ache of 'not enough' isn't a sign you're failing, but a reminder you're looking in the wrong place? You scan the empty spaces—the bank account, the calendar, the quiet house—and tally up what's missing. The math never works out. There's always a gap between what you have and what you think you need. The hunger feels real, a hollow echo in your soul that whispers you should be more, do more, have more to finally feel full.
That hunger makes sense. You live in a world that sells scarcity, that measures worth by accumulation. Of course you feel the lack. You're told every day that you need the next thing, the better version, the fuller schedule. Believing you're behind, that you need to catch up to some invisible standard—it's a natural response to the noise. It's not a character flaw. It's the water you've been swimming in.
But here is a different story, one written over the noise. 'The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.' This isn't a hopeful wish for someday. It's a declaration about right now. Picture a table. Not a buffet line where you have to grab and compete, but a feast already set. Your name is on the place card. The plate is filled—not with scraps you managed to earn, but with goodness prepared for you before you even knew you were hungry. The shepherd doesn't lead the sheep to an empty field and tell them to figure it out. He leads them to green pastures, to still waters. He provides. Your place is ready. Your portion is secure. This is the reality beneath the feeling of lack: everything required for your life, for your peace, for your soul's deep need, has already been accounted for. You are not scrambling for leftovers. You are invited to sit down to a meal where the host has thought of everything.
So let your eyes move from the empty spaces to the full plate. The security you crave isn't found in your own striving inventory. It's found in the simple, staggering fact of a prepared place. You lack nothing because the One who provides lacks nothing. The feast is served. The chair is pulled out.
Let that settle. No response needed.
A prayer for today
'I lack nothing.' You said it. I'm holding onto the words, even when my feelings argue. God, my mind keeps making lists of what's missing, running totals that never balance. I bring You the hunger, the feeling of being behind, the fear that I haven't stocked up enough for what's coming. Thank You that the story isn't written by my scarcity, but by Your endless provision. My place at the table was saved before I arrived. The plate is full, not because of anything I did, but because of who You are—my shepherd. Right now, I am receiving. I am provided for. I am enough because You are enough. That is the whole truth. Amen.
