Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”

It's that hour when the day's noise has faded, but a quieter, more persistent hum has taken its place. You're scrolling, or maybe just staring at the screen, your thumb moving on its own. Scanning. Always scanning—for the next thing to buy, the next goal to hit, the next experience that promises to finally fill the space inside your chest. The hustle to fill the emptiness isn't a flaw in you; it's a weight you've been handed by a world that measures worth by what you acquire and achieve.

Of course your heart feels hollow after a day of chasing. You've been handed a map that leads in circles, told that the next milestone, the next pleasure, the next completed task is the destination. When you arrive and the feeling doesn't last, it makes perfect sense to feel a little lost. The fatigue you carry is the understandable weight of running a race where the finish line keeps moving.

'I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor... Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done... everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.' That's not just an ancient observation—it's an invitation with your name on it. An invitation to stop the chase. The writer tried everything: work, wealth, wine, wonders. He checked every box the world offers and found the same hollow echo you're hearing now. The promise isn't hidden in the next pursuit. It's found in the stopping. The gift isn't another thing to grasp, but the permission to unclench your hands. The weight of 'what's next' was never yours to carry.

The scanning can stop. The chasing after the wind? You can stand still and let it pass. Right now, in this quiet, the relentless pressure to perform and acquire is lifting off your shoulders like a heavy winter coat you finally get to slip out of. You are already full in ways that hustle can't touch and achievement can't measure. The emptiness wasn't a problem to solve, but a space being prepared for a kind of rest that doesn't depend on your to-do list. The wind chases itself. You are home.

A prayer for today

To You, I bring this restless heart. The one that’s been scanning the horizon for the next thing to fix the ache. I’m tired of chasing the wind. I’m laying down the map that leads nowhere. You are receiving the weight of ‘what’s next’ that I’ve been carrying. You are holding the emptiness, and You are filling it with a quiet that asks for nothing. Thank You that my worth was settled long before my first hustle. I am held. I am complete. Not because of what I achieve, but because I am Yours. That is more than enough. Amen.
