Psalm 145:16

“You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.”

You’re staring at the list on your screen, or maybe the one in your head. The one that tallies what’s missing, what’s left to do, what you still need to be okay. Life feels like a series of gaps—between what you have and what you want, between your energy and your obligations. The lack is a quiet hum in the background of everything.

But what if the story isn’t about the lack? What if it’s about a hand, already open? The scripture doesn’t say you need to pry it open. It says, 'You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.' The action is His. The opening has already happened. Your part isn’t striving or earning; it’s the simple, quiet act of noticing your own open palms. Of realizing they were never meant to be clenched in pursuit, but open in reception.

Goodness isn’t a reward waiting at the finish line of a perfect day. It’s not a transaction for good behavior or high productivity. It’s the gift already placed in your open hands. The breath in your lungs right now. The solid ground beneath your feet. The fact that you made it to this moment, weary but here. Satisfaction isn’t a feeling you manufacture by checking everything off; it’s a state you inhabit when you see what’s already been given. The open hand of God isn’t withholding, waiting for you to be better. It’s extended, spilling over with provision meant for you in this exact, imperfect now.

So let your own hands relax. Uncurl the fingers. The goodness you’ve been scanning the horizon for? It’s already here, in the quiet of this room, in the beat of your own heart. You don’t have to chase it down. You are already held within it. Is this enough? The open hand, the full heart, the gift received without earning—yes. This has always been enough.

A prayer for today

Thank You for my hands. For the fact that they don’t have to grasp or clutch tonight. Thank You that satisfaction isn’t a prize I race toward, but a gift I find already in my open palms. I’ve been living like there’s a shortage. Like I need to secure my own goodness. But You open Your hand. You satisfy. The action is Yours. The provision is complete. So here, with empty hands and a tired heart, I receive. I am satisfied, not because I fixed everything, but because You gave everything. My part is just this: to stop clenching, and to notice the gift already here. Thank You. Amen.
