James 1:17
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
You just put the phone down. You were scrolling for a spark—someone else's story, someone else's purpose—hoping a little of it would rub off. The screen goes dark, and the room feels quiet in a way that asks: where is my joy?
That question deserves a straight answer.
James 1:17 gives one: "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." Notice the direction. Down. It arrives. Joy is not a reward for scrolling to the right post, or noticing beauty keenly enough, or finally getting your spiritual life together. It comes from above, from a source that does not flicker.
You were never meant to chase it. Chasing is exhausting, and joy keeps moving if you're the one doing the running. But a gift—a gift just lands.
The Giver is constant, so the giving is constant. That warmth you're looking for is already in transit, sent before you ever thought to search for it.
Open your hands. Let it land.
A prayer for today
The words won't come easily tonight, God. I've been looking for a feeling instead of receiving the gift. I bring You my empty, open hands. I bring You the quiet ache for meaning. Thank You that every good thing comes from You. Thank You that joy isn't a reward I work for, but a gift You give. Your kindness is descending right now, filling this quiet space. I am found by a beauty I did not create. I am held in the light that does not change. That is enough. Amen.
A Heart That Notices Beauty · Your mind is crowded with worries, missing the good around you. This journey offers a light practice of receiving joy in the beauty already given.
