Isaiah 55:2
“Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.”
There's a word for this feeling. It's called 'the grind.' The relentless hum of expectation—from your inbox, your calendar, the mirror, the quiet voice that tallies your worth by what you crossed off. You're measuring your day by its yield, its tangible proof. And when the proof feels thin, a familiar weight settles: the demand for output, for something to show for all this effort.
That demand makes sense. You've been taught that productivity is the scorecard. You've believed that your value is a product you manufacture, day by day, task by task. The ache of an unfinished list isn't just about the tasks; it's the fear that you, yourself, might be unfinished.
Listen to this, from a place deeper than the demand: 'Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.'
This isn't a scolding. It's the gentlest of interruptions. It's the question that unravels the whole economy of striving. Why exhaust yourself chasing what never fills? The pressure to produce, to earn your keep in the world and in your own heart—it's like laboring for food that can't nourish you. It will never satisfy because it was never meant to. Your worth was never a commodity to be mined from your daily output. It was a settled fact before you ever lifted a finger.
The invitation is to stop spending your labor there. To listen, and to eat what is genuinely good. What is 'good'? It's the kindness you didn't earn. It's the belonging that comes without prerequisites. It's the reality that you are loved and wanted, full stop, not because of what you make but because of who you are—a person worth delighting in. This is the richest fare. It's already served. You don't have to cook it, buy it, or prove you deserve a seat at the table.
The demand for output loses its power here. Its grip loosens. The weight of proving yourself begins to dissolve, not because you fought it off, but because you've been shown a deeper, truer reality. Your value is detached from your production line. It is anchored in a love that declares you enough, simply because you are.
Morning will come with its own lists. But tonight, that demand is released. You are not your output. You are beloved. Let that truth be the only thing you produce right now: the quiet, settled peace of being fully accepted.
A prayer for today
Honestly? I'm tired of the scorecard. Tired of feeling like my value is a daily calculation. God, I bring this worn-out engine of achievement to You—the part of me that only knows how to run. You see the labor that doesn't satisfy. You know the hunger for something more solid than accomplishment. I am letting that old demand fall away now. It was a heavy coat I was never meant to wear. Thank You that my worth is already settled. Thank You that I am invited to simply eat what is good—to receive the kindness of being Yours, without a single thing to show for it. I am held in a love that has nothing to do with my output. I rest here, unproductive and utterly accepted. That is more than enough. Amen.
