“Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.”
Friday night. The week is done, but your mind is still running. That old memory surfaces again—the one you thought you had put behind you. It's back, and it stings just like before. And part of you wonders: why does this keep happening? Am I not healed? Am I broken in some way that doesn't fix?
Here's what the psalmist did with that kind of pain. He didn't explain it or apologize for it. He just brought it straight to God: "Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins." That's it. He named the hurt—affliction, distress—and asked God to deal with it. No shame about how long it had been going on. No justification for why it still hurt.
Old hurts come back sometimes. That doesn't mean you failed to heal. It means the wound was real, and real wounds can still ache when the weather changes. What matters tonight is that God isn't tired of hearing about it. He is still looking. He is still taking the weight of it. You can bring the same hurt back as many times as it returns. He doesn't keep a record of how often you've asked.
A prayer for today
My chest feels tight where the old wound lives. You see the exact shape of it, God. I'm bringing the memory that stings—the one I usually try to hide because its ache makes me feel unfinished. I don't have to explain why it still hurts or apologize for its return. You are looking at my affliction, not looking away. You are taking the weight of the mess, the shame that clings to it like a shadow. I am seen in my distress, completely. I am held in the middle of the sting. Thank You that my scars are safe with You. They are part of my story, not my sentence. I rest here, in this seeing. Amen.
