John 1:12-13

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

Somewhere between the last task of the day and the first thought of tomorrow, here you are. In the quiet, a question often surfaces: do I belong here? Is my place secure, or is it something I’m still auditioning for? The mental scorecard comes out, tallying wins and losses, measuring your worth by a standard that never seems satisfied.

The weight of that question makes sense. The feeling that you must prove your legitimacy, that your spot at the table is conditional—it’s a heavy coat to wear. You’ve been believing that your place is a prize to be won, a trophy earned through perfect performance or unwavering strength.

Right now, in this breath, a different truth is being handed to you. It’s not a prize. It’s a right. The scripture says it plainly: 'He gave the right to become children of God.' Did you catch that? He gave. The right. It arrives, complete and settled, before you lift a finger. Your place isn’t something you find or earn; it’s something you receive. It was decided for you, born not from human effort or will, but from God’s own heart. This is the settled place: you are a child. Not because of what you’ve done, but because of who He is. Your right to be here, to simply exist and breathe, is already signed, sealed, and delivered. The door wasn’t unlocked by your achievements; it was flung open by a love that names you family. You don’t have to find your worth—it finds you, wrapped in the unshakable identity of being a beloved son or daughter.

So rest into that. Your shoulders can drop. The endless audition is over. Your name is already on the list, written in permanent ink. You belong. Full stop.

Sleep well, beloved. Your place is settled.

A prayer for today

Thank You that my name isn’t written in pencil. Thank You that my place isn’t a maybe, dependent on my best behavior or my worst day. I’m so grateful that You handed me the right to be Yours—a gift, not a reward I scrambled for. I bring You the exhaustion of that scramble, the tiredness from trying to earn what was already mine. You are holding that fatigue now. I am held, simply as I am. My identity is settled because You settled it. That is enough. Amen.

Your Right to Do Nothing · You feel guilty for simply stopping to breathe. Here, you receive a liberating truth: your right to exist is a gift, not a task to be earned or a privilege to prove.
