Psalm 121:8
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
Your phone screen is dark. You’ve been staring at your own reflection in the black glass for a full minute, not even realizing it. Somewhere between the last notification and this heavy silence, you got lost in the crowd of your own thoughts. It’s that feeling of being one face among millions, wondering if anyone truly sees the person behind the profile, the weariness behind the ‘I’m fine.’
The ache to be noticed—to have your specific weight, your particular story, recognized—makes perfect sense. It’s a human hunger. You’ve been believing that being known is something you must earn, a prize for being interesting enough, put-together enough, or spiritually shiny enough. You’ve been scanning the room of your own life, trying to catch a favorable glance, when the glance you long for was never something you had to attract.
‘The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.’ That’s not a suggestion—it’s an invitation with your name on it. His watchful care is not a reward you achieve; it’s a settled fact. Before you woke up anxious this morning, His gaze was already on you. While you scrolled, comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel, His attention was resting on you—not on the curated version, but on the real, tired, hopeful you. In the middle of the crowd, His focus finds you. It’s a quiet assurance that arrives without your striving, a constant presence that doesn’t flicker when your faith does.
This changes everything. You don’t have to perform to be perceived. You don’t have to shout to be seen. The most important gaze—the one that defines your worth, your belonging, your safety—is already settled. It’s fixed. It’s unwavering. So you can stop trying to make yourself noticeable. You can stop straining to hear your name over the noise. Your name is already known. Your story is already held. Your coming and your going, your rising and your resting, are all wrapped in this watchful, kind attention.
You can put the phone down. You can close your eyes. You can stop performing, even for yourself. The work of being seen is already done. You are known. Right here, right now, that is the truest thing about you.
A prayer for today
My breath feels shallow in my chest. The day’s noise is a dull echo in my ears. You see the real rhythm underneath. I’m so tired of trying to be seen, of crafting an image that might be worth a second look. Thank You that I don’t have to curate my soul for You. Your gaze finds me in the mess, in the quiet, in the pretending. I am seen. I am known. Not as a project, but as a person. You are watching over my coming and going—the stumbles and the steady steps. My story is safe in Your watchful care. So I rest here, as the known one. That is my name tonight. Amen.
