Psalm 73:23
“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.”
The feeling has a name. It’s called being unmoored. Like you’ve been pushing through the current for so long, your feet can’t find the bottom anymore. The weight you’re carrying—the worry, the weariness, the what-ifs—it all feels like it’s pulling you under, and your own strength is just treading water. You’re adrift, and the shore feels like a memory.
Listen to this, from a place just as deep: 'Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.' This isn’t a theory. It’s a grip. A firm, sure hand meeting yours in the middle of the drift. Your fingers don’t have to search or strain to find it. It’s already there, wrapped around yours, settled and steady. The weight you feel isn’t ignored or dismissed. It’s met. Met by a strength that doesn’t waver, by a presence that doesn’t clock out when you’re at your worst.
This holding isn’t something you found because you swam well enough. It was given. It’s the kind of kindness that operates on a different system—not merit, but mercy. You are being saved, right now, not from the water itself, but from having to swim alone. The current might still move, but you are anchored. Held. The frantic scramble for purchase in your soul can stop. You don’t have to find your footing because you are being firmly held by a hand that knows the depth and isn’t afraid of it.
Right here. Right now. In the very breath you’re taking, the grip is secure. The drift has stopped because you are held. You can stop treading. You can let the weight be carried. This moment, this anchor, is where you belong.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the drift. The feeling of being carried away from solid ground. God, I’m bringing You the weight that makes my arms ache and the current that makes my heart tired. You already have me. Your hand is already wrapped around mine—firm, sure, unshaken by how hard I’ve been trying to swim. I don’t have to grasp for You. I am held. The strength keeping me from going under is Yours, not mine. Thank You that being saved looks like this: not a frantic rescue I earned, but a steady grip I’m given. I am anchored here, in this kindness. The scrambling can stop. I am held. That is enough. Amen.
