Proverbs 3:24

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”

You're lying awake, running tomorrow's list for the third time. The screen glows with a forgotten tab. Your body is still, but your mind is a scrolling feed of what-ifs and should-haves. The quiet of the room only makes the internal noise louder, a relentless hum beneath your ribs.

The fear that you won't be ready? The anxiety that tomorrow's demands will find you empty? It makes sense. Your mind is trying to protect you, to solve problems in the dark. But protection has turned into a prison of its own making, where rest feels like a distant country you can't find the map to.

What if the very thing you're chasing has already found you? 'When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.' This isn't a hopeful suggestion for the future. It's a declaration for right now. The fear of being unprepared? Handled. The anxiety about tomorrow's empty tank? Already filled. Sweet sleep isn't a prize you earn by finishing your mental checklist. It's a handed gift, waiting on the nightstand beside you, with your name already written on the tag.

You don't have to quiet the storm inside. A divine hush is settling over the chaos, not by shouting it down, but by whispering beneath it. This slumber isn't something you achieve; it's something that arrives, like a soft blanket being draped over your shoulders from behind. The work of holding your world together was never yours to begin with. It's being done for you, in the quiet, while your eyes are closed.

So let the list go. Let the scroll stop. The gift is already in your hands. The divine hush is here, softening the edges of every worry. Slumber is settling, right now, in the space between one breath and the next. You are being carried into rest.

A prayer for today

Into Your hands, I place this racing mind. All its loops and unfinished sentences. Into Your hands, I place this body, tired but wired. Thank You that sleep isn't a test I need to pass. It's a kindness You extend, a gift already handed to me. I am not fighting for rest; I am being settled into it by Your quiet promise. The hush is Yours. The sweet sleep is Your doing. I am held in this dark, not by my own ability to finally shut down, but by Your certainty that the work is done. I am receiving this gift now. That is all. Amen.
