Matthew 11:30
“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
You’re lying in bed, replaying the conversations, the emails you should have sent, the kindness you meant to offer but didn’t. The mental list is scrolling on a loop behind your eyes, and your body feels like it’s made of lead. The day is technically over, but the carrying isn’t.
Of course you’re exhausted. You’ve been hauling a weight that was never designed for a single set of shoulders. You’ve been believing that holding it all together was the assignment, that if you just tried a little harder, the ache in your spirit would finally ease. It makes perfect sense that you’re worn thin.
What if the very thing you’re afraid of dropping—the responsibility, the expectation, the perfect performance—is the exact weight you’re invited to lay down? 'For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.' That’s the reversal. The burden you feel crushing you? It was never yours. The yoke you’ve been straining under—the one that chafes and leaves you breathless—isn’t the one offered. His yoke is different. It’s a shared frame, built for two. It’s the kind where the weight is distributed, where the pull is steady and manageable because you’re not doing it alone. Your weariness isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign you were trying to carry a solo load. The light burden isn’t about the absence of weight, but the presence of a Partner who bears the lion’s share. The easy yoke isn’t about no work, but about work that fits, that doesn’t grind you down into dust.
So what if, right now, you stopped trying to adjust your grip on a load you were never meant to lift? What if you simply stepped out of the harness you buckled yourself into? The relief you’re waiting for isn’t on the other side of more effort. It’s in the exhale of handing over what was His to carry all along. Is it really this simple? To be tired, and to be met exactly there? Yes. It always was.
A prayer for today
Naming it: I am so tired from carrying this. Naming the truer thing: You built a yoke for two. God, I’ve been straining under a weight I named ‘mine.’ I thought it was my job to haul it, to never set it down. You see the marks it’s left. I am stepping out of that lonely harness. I am done trying to make a solo burden light. Your yoke is here. It fits. You are bearing the weight. I am being carried along in the work. Thank You that my weariness isn’t a problem to solve, but a place where Your kindness meets me. I am held. That is the whole answer. Amen.
Unburdened and Unbound · You've carried that weight until your shoulders ache. Now, celebrate the relief of setting it down and walking forward, light and free.
