Psalm 103:12
“as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
We've all had those moments. The ones where an old, familiar feeling creeps in—a whisper of 'not enough,' a replay of a mistake, the heavy script of yesterday that you didn't mean to pick up again today. You find yourself reading from it, almost by reflex. The words are worn, the pages dog-eared from use. It tells a story about you that feels true in your bones, even as your heart wishes it weren't.
What if you didn't have to argue with that story tonight? What if you could simply acknowledge its weight in your hands without believing its verdict? The ache it brings is real. The memory it holds has sharp edges. Trying to pretend it doesn't exist or that you're 'over it' often just makes the book feel heavier. But what if the weight itself is an invitation—not to carry it, but to finally feel how tired your arms are from holding it?
'As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.' Sit with that distance for a moment. East and west never meet. There is no point on the map where you can stand and say, 'Here is where my failure ends and I begin again.' The separation is complete, infinite, woven into the fabric of creation itself. The mess you made, the words you regret, the choices that haunt you—they have been taken to a horizon you cannot see and will never reach. This isn't a metaphor about trying harder to forget. This is a declaration about a finished transaction. The debt is paid. The record is cleared. The old script you're clutching? It's been rendered fiction. The main character—the one defined by their past—no longer exists. You are holding the biography of a ghost.
So feel the weight of that book in your hands. Acknowledge its familiar heft. And then, because the story is no longer true, you are free to set it down. Not with a dramatic flourish, but with the quiet, final sigh of someone laying down a burden they were never meant to carry in the first place. The shelf is empty. Your hands are open.
The old story is closed. You are written anew.
A prayer for today
Weary. Weary of rereading the same old lines. God, You see the book in my hands—the one I keep opening, the story I keep believing defines me. I'm tired of its weight. Thank You that I don't have to edit the ending or white-out the bad chapters. Thank You that the distance You created isn't something I must measure or maintain. You have removed it. You have closed the book. The verdict I fear has been overturned by a love that leaves no evidence behind. So here, with this acknowledged weight, I let my arms fall. I am not holding it anymore. You already have. The shelf is clear, and I am held in the quiet space that's left. That is all. Amen.
