Isaiah 49:16
“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
The screen glows. The room is dark. Your eyes are tired but your mind won't stop. It's tracing the edges of your identity, wondering if you're making a mark or just leaving a smudge. Maybe you've been feeling like a temporary note in the margin of a much bigger story, easily overlooked, destined to fade.
That ache makes sense. In a world that moves fast and forgets faster, it's natural to wonder if you are truly known—not your name on a list, but you, the person behind the tired eyes. You're not wrong for needing that reassurance.
'See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.' An engraving isn't a sticky note or a penciled reminder. It is cut in, permanent, requiring care and intention. Your name—not your performance, not your best version—is carried in the hands of the One who holds everything. And your walls, the full shape of your life, your struggles, your quiet mornings, your weary nights, are ever before Him. Not glanced at and filed away. Ever before Him. That is a different kind of knowing. It means right now, in this dark room, you are not a face in a crowd. You are seen with the kind of attention that doesn't blink.
You don't have to shout to be noticed. You don't have to do more to be remembered. The knowing is already there, settled and sure. You are held by a love that looked at you and decided to keep you.
A prayer for today
Into Your hands, I place this question of who I am. All of it. The parts that feel significant and the parts that feel small. You already know the shape of my name. You’ve already spoken it. Thank You that I don’t have to carve my own legacy or shout to be remembered. I am held in the quiet certainty of Your engraving. I am known by a love that decided I was worth keeping, forever. My life is safe here, sealed in Your promise. I rest in that. It is enough. Amen.
