Psalm 16:6

“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”

Your phone screen shows another highlight reel. Someone else’s vacation, promotion, milestone. You put it down. The silence that follows isn’t quiet—it’s filled with the low hum of a question: *Am I behind?*

The weight of that question makes sense. The feeling that everyone is moving while you’re stuck, that you’re watching life from the sidelines—it’s a heavy coat you didn’t choose to wear. You don’t have to argue with the feeling or convince yourself it’s wrong. It’s just there, like the time on the clock, ticking.

But listen. Beneath that noise, something else is true. A quieter, steadier voice is speaking a promise meant just for you: 'The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.' This isn’t about the path you see on someone else’s screen. This is about *your* lane. The one laid out for your feet alone. Those 'boundary lines'—they’re not fences keeping you out. They’re markers of a space that belongs to you. A space cleared of the clutter of comparison, waiting just for you. Your inheritance isn’t something you race toward; it’s not a prize for being fastest. It’s the gift of your own life, your own pace, your own story—already delightful, already yours. The panic of falling behind fades when you realize you were never in anyone else’s race. You are exactly where you’re meant to be. The path isn’t crowded. It’s cleared.

So let the noise of comparison fade to a whisper, then to silence. Your lane is here. It is pleasant. It is yours. There is no one to catch up to, because your place was never in doubt. You can stop running. You can simply be, right here, on your own solid ground.

A prayer for today

Naming it: the scramble, the fear of being last. Naming the truth: my lane is mine. God, the noise of comparison is so loud. I get lost in it, measuring my life against glimpses of others’. I forget what’s mine. Thank You that my inheritance isn’t up for vote. Thank You that my boundary lines were drawn with kindness. This space I’m in—it’s not a waiting room. It’s my own ground, cleared and pleasant, given just to me. I am planted here. I am not behind. I am held, right in my own lane. That is enough. Amen.

The Quiet Panic of Falling Behind · You feel the frantic hum of everyone else's progress. This path offers a steadying truth: your life is not a race to be won, but a pace to be walked.
