Colossians 3:15

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

You're searching for a calm you can't quite grasp, and there's a restless hum under your skin. How can you want peace so badly and feel so far from it at the same time? You keep looking for it as a prize at the finish line—a state to reach once the noise inside finally dies down.

That makes sense. Of course peace feels like something to earn. You've been believing that calm is something you have to feel your way into before it counts.

Here is the turn: 'Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.' The word 'rule' here means to act as an umpire—to settle the call, to make the deciding judgment. An umpire doesn't wait for the game to calm down before stepping in. He steps in precisely because there's a dispute. Christ's peace works the same way. It doesn't wait for you to feel settled. It moves into the unsettled place and makes a decision: you are safe, you are held, this is enough.

That ruling is happening right now—not after you achieve some better emotional state. Your restlessness doesn't disqualify you. It's actually the exact moment this peace shows up to do its work.

You don't have to feel calm before the peace is real. The peace is already real, and slowly, it brings the calm with it.

A prayer for today

Naming it: restlessness. Naming the search: for a peace that feels just out of reach. God, I keep looking for a finish line where I can finally stop and breathe. But Your word says Your peace is already ruling—not waiting for me to feel better first. So here is my heart—the anxious thoughts, the mental list, the hum of not-enough. You are the umpire. You step into the dispute and make the call. I am not building this calm; I am being calmed by You. The verdict is already in: I am safe. I am home. Thank You that the peace was working before I felt it. Let my breathing slow to that truth tonight. Amen.
