1 John 4:19

“We love because he first loved us.”

Notice your hands. Are they curled into loose fists, holding onto the day's invisible list? Or maybe they're flat and still, but the muscles in your forearms are tight, ready for the next thing. Your breath is shallow, held in the top of your chest as if waiting for permission to fully arrive. Your body is telling a story of bracing.

That tension makes sense. You've been living in a world that asks you to give first — your energy, your attention, your care — and hopes you might receive something back in return. It's exhausting to always be the one reaching out, proving your worth through what you can provide.

Here is the answer you've needed: "We love because he first loved us." He loved you first — before you had anything to offer, before you even knew you needed it. That means your worth isn't something you earn or demonstrate. It was already settled before you did a single thing today. This love doesn't wait for your output. It doesn't rise and fall with your mood or your performance. It simply is, and it is yours.

Feel that? A subtle shift, a softening in the places you've been holding so tight. That's the weight of performance being lifted — not by your effort, but by a simple truth: you are loved first. Notice the space that creates in your chest. That's room to just be.

A prayer for today

My breath is caught in my throat, God. I’ve been holding it, waiting for the next task, the next demand. You see the tightness. You know the ache of always giving from an empty cup. Thank You that Your love isn’t a response to my output. It’s the starting line. You loved me first. That truth is rewiring the frantic circuits in my mind right now. I am received. I am cherished before I do a single thing. My worth is settled, a fact signed in Your kindness. So this tight breath can finally release. I am breathing out the old story of earning. I am breathing in the gift of being beloved. That’s all. That’s everything. Amen.
