Psalm 107:9
“for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
There's a word for this feeling. It's called 'scarcity.' It's the quiet whisper that says there's not enough—not enough time, not enough energy, not enough of you to go around. It's the hollow ache after a full meal, the thirst that returns minutes after a long drink. You're carrying the weight of 'not yet' and 'if only,' believing that fullness is a destination you haven't reached.
What if that ache isn't a sign you're failing, but a reminder you're human? What if the hunger you feel isn't a problem to solve tonight, but a pointer to the answer that's already here? The longing makes sense. It's understandable that you'd feel empty when the world keeps taking.
Listen to this promise, spoken over your specific hunger: 'for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.' Did you catch the verb tense? He *satisfies*. He *fills*. This isn't a future transaction waiting for your correct payment. This is a present reality, already in motion. The good things aren't prizes at the end of a race you're losing. They are gifts, arriving at the door of your weariness because the Giver knows your address. Your thirst is met before you can form the request. Your hunger is answered not because you gathered the ingredients, but because the feast was prepared for you. The filling is an act done *for* you, not a task assigned *to* you.
So let the metaphor land. The cup isn't half-empty, waiting for your effort to top it off. It is overflowing, right now, because a kindness you didn't earn is pouring without stopping. The plate isn't bare, demanding you hunt and gather. It is full of good things, placed in front of you while your hands were still empty. The abundance isn't coming. It is already here, saturating the dry ground of your soul. You are being filled. The quenching is happening. The hunger is being answered with a feast that has your name on the place card.
Feel that? That's satisfaction, arriving without effort. That's relief, seeping into the cracks. That's fullness, already poured.
A prayer for today
'He satisfies the thirsty,' You said. God, I'm naming my thirst. It's for rest, for peace, for the feeling of being enough. I'm naming my hunger, too—for connection, for purpose, for a break from the lack. Thank You that these aren't secrets I have to explain. You see the empty places. And Your promise isn't that You might fill them if I try hard enough. Your promise is that You *do*. You are the One who fills. Right now, You are satisfying. You are pouring good things into the hollow spaces. So I am held in this truth: my cup overflows. Not because I filled it, but because Your kindness never stops pouring. I am full. Thank You. Amen.
