Psalm 77:5

“I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;”

You're staring at the screen, trying to picture what comes next. But the image won't focus. The path ahead is just a smear of color and shadow, a blurry road you're supposed to walk down with confidence. Of course it feels impossible to see. Your eyes are tired from looking backward.

It makes perfect sense. When your gaze has been held captive by yesterday—by the replay of that conversation, the weight of that choice, the ghost of a version of yourself you thought you'd be by now—the future has no choice but to fade into a haze. You can't focus on two places at once. The ache of looking back is real, and it's stealing your sight for what's ahead.

'I thought about the former days, the years of long ago.' The writer of this ancient song names it plainly. He's doing exactly what you're doing. He's stuck in the reruns. There's no condemnation in that admission, only a shared human experience. The gift hidden in this verse isn't a command to stop looking back. It's the quiet permission to notice where you're looking. To name the captivity. The moment you whisper, 'My eyes are stuck on yesterday,' something shifts. The captivity is named, and named things lose their power to hold you completely.

The blurry road isn't a sign you're lost. It's evidence your attention has been somewhere else. And attention, unlike your gaze, can be gently redirected. Not by force, but by a simple, kind invitation. What if, just for this breath, you didn't have to see the whole road? What if the next step wasn't about clarity, but about turning your head, even one degree, away from the familiar ache of the past and toward the quiet, unknown grace of this present moment? The future comes into focus one now at a time.

You are allowed to stop straining your eyes. You are allowed to let the road be unclear. Your safety was never in seeing far ahead; it was always in the One who walks it with you, step by step. Let your shoulders relax. Let your eyes rest. The looking back can end now.

A prayer for today

'I thought about the former days.' I've been doing that, God. My mind is a museum of old hurts and what-ifs, and the entrance fee is all my attention for tomorrow. You see how my gaze is held captive. I'm bringing You the reruns, the replays, the heavy album of yesterday. Thank You that naming this to You begins to loosen its grip. I don't have to wrestle my eyes free. You are gently turning my head. You are shifting my focus from the closed door behind me to the space around me right now, where You are. I am held in this present moment. The blurry road is Yours to illuminate, one step's worth of light at a time. I am here, and You are here. That is the only clarity I need tonight. Amen.
