Psalm 40:2

“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

The ground doesn't feel solid tonight. One minute you're upright, the next there's a lurch in your stomach, a catch in your breath—like the floorboards have shifted beneath you. Maybe it was a piece of bad news, a sudden change in plans, or just the accumulated weight of too many uncertain tomorrows. Your internal compass is spinning, and all you know is this unsteadiness, this wobble in your soul.

It makes sense. When the world feels slippery, your footing is bound to feel unsure. You're not failing at stability. You're just human, standing in the middle of a reality that often feels more like a slimy pit than solid ground. The desire for something firm to stand on isn't a weakness; it's the most honest prayer your body knows how to pray.

Right now, in this breath where the wobble is most real, listen to this: 'He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.' Do you hear the action in that? He lifted. He set. He gave. This isn't a theory about eventual stability. This is a story about a rescue that's already in motion for you. The firm rock isn't a destination you must struggle toward through the muck. It's the place where your feet are being planted, even now, especially now, in the wobble. Your security isn't found in your own perfect balance. It's found in the one who does the lifting, the setting, the securing. Your footing is being established by hands that don't slip, on a foundation that doesn't shake.

So breathe into the unsteadiness. You don't have to tense up and fight for balance. You are being held upright. The wobble you feel is just the old, unstable ground giving way to the new, unshakable rock. Your place is secure. Your standing is sure. Go gently into this night, beloved. You are standing on a promise that will not move.

A prayer for today

I don't know the right words for this feeling. The ground feels like it's moving, and my prayers feel just as unsteady. So here I am, bringing You the wobble in my spirit, the fear of falling. You see the slimy pit my thoughts keep circling. You know how badly I want solid rock beneath my feet. Thank You that I don't have to construct my own stability. Thank You that the promise isn't about me finding my footing, but about You giving it to me. You are lifting me. You are setting my feet. Right now, in my confusion, I am standing on a foundation You made. That is enough. I am held. Amen.
