1 Thessalonians 5:11

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Your phone lights up with another 'how are you?' You stare at it, thumb hovering. The cursor blinks, waiting for a real answer you don't have the energy to give. Maybe you'll just send a thumbs-up. Maybe you'll say 'fine' and mean the opposite.

It feels insignificant, this exchange. Like you're just moving words through the air to fill a silence. You wonder if any of it matters—the check-ins, the casual texts, the surface-level chatter that seems to make up so much of your day.

'Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. An invitation to see what's already true. Your ordinary words, the ones that feel too small or too tired, are already wrapped in a love that makes them matter. The sacred isn't something you have to manufacture or perform. It's already settled into the 'how was your day?' and the 'thinking of you.' It's in the text you send even when you're depleted, because connection matters to you. It's in the listening ear you offer when your own mind is loud. This isn't about crafting perfect, holy sentences. It's about the love that infuses the imperfect ones. The love that chooses to reach out, however clumsily. The love that says 'I see you' in a million tiny ways.

That love is what makes the small talk holy. It's what turns an automatic question into a lifeline and a simple reply into a sanctuary. You are building each other up, right now, in the quiet, consistent showing up. Your presence in someone's life—through a screen, through a voice, through shared silence—is the work. And it is enough.

This moment, as you read this, the sacred is settled. Your words, past and future, are already held in kindness. You don't have to make them weightier. Their weight is love itself. Right here. Right now. You are exactly where you need to be, speaking a language of care that is already complete.

A prayer for today

Naming it: these words feel insignificant. The 'how are yous' and the 'just checkings-in.' They feel like dust in the wind. And naming the truer thing: You are in them. You are the love that wraps my tired texts and my distracted listening. You are the kindness that settles into my ordinary, making it sacred without my effort. I am held in this truth: my small talk is already holy ground. Thank You that I don't have to be profound to matter. Thank You that my simple presence is a gift You crafted. My reaching out is enough because Your love reaches through me. I am quiet here, resting in that completion. Amen.
