Psalm 131:2

“But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.”

Notice the quiet in your body. Not the peaceful kind, but the hollow kind. The space where feeling used to be is just... still. Your hands are open but empty. Your breath is shallow, like you're waiting for something to happen, but nothing does. It's not sadness. It's not even tiredness. It's just a flat line on the monitor of your soul, and you're watching it, wondering if you should try to feel something more.

That numbness makes sense. After days of noise and demand and output, the system goes quiet. It's a protective hush. You're not broken for feeling blank. You're not failing at feeling. This stillness isn't emptiness—it's a space being made. A safe, cleared-out room inside you where nothing is asked and nothing needs to be performed.

Right now, in this breath, something is happening in that quiet. The scripture paints it: 'I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.' Picture a child who has stopped crying, not because the need was ignored, but because it was fully met. The frantic searching is over. The child is simply held. No agenda. No next feed scheduled. Just presence. That's the gift being offered to you in this numbness. You are that child. The frantic need to feel a certain way, to generate spiritual emotion, to *produce* a connection? It's been weaned. The need is released. You are being held in a quiet so deep and so safe that contentment can arrive. Not a bubbly happiness, but a solid, weighty knowing. You are in the arms that will not put you down. The stillness around you is not absence—it's the shape of being gathered close. Your quiet heart isn't a problem to solve; it's a sign you are already home.

Breathe in. You are held. Breathe out. You are safe. Let the quiet be what it is: the evidence of a love that doesn't need your performance, only your presence. Right here. Right now. That is more than enough.

A prayer for today

Thank You that silence counts as prayer. Thank You that my empty hands are an acceptable offering. I'm bringing You this quietness inside—the hollow space, the flatline feeling. I don't have the energy to manufacture awe or stir up passion. And You are not waiting for me to. You are the mother holding the weaned child. I am that child. My contentment is not my own work; it is Your gift, arriving in this stillness. You are wrapping this numbness in safety. You are making this quiet into a home. I am held. I am known. I am quieted, because You are here. That is all. Amen.
