Psalm 139:7-10
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”
Numbness. That's the word for it. Not sadness, not anger—just a hollow quiet where feeling used to be. You might be scrolling, or staring at a wall, or lying in bed aware of a space inside you that echoes. It's the quiet space that feels too empty, the emotional flatline after a long season of too much.
What if this emptiness isn't a problem you need to solve? What if the pressure to 'feel something again' is a weight you can finally set down? The ache of absence is real, and you don't have to perform or produce your way out of it. You're allowed to just be here, in the quiet.
Listen to this, from a voice that knows the deepest corners of your soul: 'Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.' This isn't a theory. It's a map of a love that chases you into every shadow, every hollow place. The very void you're afraid of? He's already there. The quiet space you're sitting in? It's not empty. A presence arrives in the numbness, not with a flashy rescue, but with a steady, patient filling. Your bed in the depths—that place of feeling nothing—is exactly where His hand finds you to hold you fast. This emptiness is not yours to solve. It is held. You are held.
So right now, notice the quiet. Don't fight it. Don't fill it. Let the truth sink in: you are not alone in this space. The presence that fills heavens and depths is filling the hollow places in you, not because you summoned it, but because it never left. Feel that? That's security, weaving itself into the emptiness. You are accompanied, even here.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the hollow quiet. The feeling of nothing where something should be. And You're already there. I'm bringing this numbness to You. I don't have the energy to manufacture a feeling or fix this void. You meet me right here, in the depth of this quiet space. Your promise holds me: even if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. So I am held. This emptiness is being filled by a presence that never left. Thank You that I don't have to find You. You have already found me. I rest here, accompanied. Amen.
