Matthew 28:20
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Notice the quiet hum of your own breathing. The slight weight of your body in the chair. The space behind your eyes, tired from scanning the horizon for something—for meaning, for a sign, for an arrival you’re supposed to be waiting for. You’ve been holding your breath without knowing it, braced for a knock that hasn’t come.
That tension makes sense. You’ve been told to seek, to search, to prepare a room in your heart for a guest who might come. You’ve been living like a host perpetually on call, wondering if you’ve missed the doorbell, if the welcome mat is tidy enough. The ache of anticipation has become a familiar furniture in your soul.
But here is the story your bones have been waiting to hear: the room is already occupied. The love you’ve been straining to find has already pulled up a chair in the corner of your heart and settled in. It didn’t wait for an invitation you perfected. It didn’t check the clock or pack a bag for a quick exit. This is the promise with your name etched into it: 'And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'
This isn’t a presence that visits. It’s a presence that inhabits. You are not a waiting room. You are a home. The searching can stop because what you were looking for was never lost—it was the foundation you were standing on all along. The love that defines you isn’t something you earn or find; it’s the settled reality that holds you, the walls around your life, the air in your lungs.
Right now, in this breath, the clench of waiting is softening. The door you’ve been guarding was never locked from the outside. You are not awaiting an arrival. You are resting in a companionship that was sealed before you took your first breath. The work of hosting is done. The work of being found is complete.
Sleep well, beloved. You are home, and you are not alone. That is the truest thing about you.
A prayer for today
My breath is shallow from all the waiting. You see the tightness in my chest. I’ve been living like a temporary residence, airing out rooms for a guest. Thank You that I don’t have to keep the lights on for You. Thank You that You are not a visitor. You are the settled One in the corner, the love that doesn’t check its suitcase by the door. Your promise is the floor beneath my feet. I am not searching. I am found. I am not preparing. I am already home in You. This is enough. I am enough, because You are here. Amen.
