Colossians 2:14
“…having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
'You should have known better.' The inner prosecutor rests its case. The evidence is all there—the sharp word you wish you could take back, the promise to yourself you broke again, the good intention that just... evaporated. The verdict feels final: guilty. The sentence is a heavy, familiar shame.
That weight makes sense. When you look at the list, it's hard to argue. The charges seem legitimate. The feeling that you need to make up for it, to balance the scales, is a logical next step. It's the human response to a ledger full of red.
Picture this: you're standing before the judge, prepared to plead your case, to explain the mitigating circumstances. But before you can open your mouth, He smiles. He reaches over, takes the thick file folder with your name on it, and pulls out the single, damning page. Then, with a permanent marker, He draws a line through every single item. Not a correction. Not a note. A complete, dark, obliterating line. Then He holds up the blank page for you to see. 'Having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us,' the scripture says, 'he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.' The list of wrongs wasn't just archived or set aside for later review. It was destroyed. The pen that wrote your failures? It's out of your hand. The authority to keep score? It was nailed down and finished.
This isn't a suggestion to try harder to be good. It's the announcement that the case is closed. The record isn't just clean; it never existed in the first place. The relief you're feeling—that slight loosening in your chest—isn't you manufacturing positivity. It's your soul recognizing a truth that has already been true: you are free. Completely, outrageously, unexpectedly free. The blank page isn't a challenge to fill it with perfect behavior. It's a gift. It's the space where your story is no longer defined by what you did wrong, but by the kindness that declared you right.
You're not on probation. You're home.
A prayer for today
The words won't come easily tonight, God. I'm so used to bringing You my apologies, my explanations, my plans to do better. I don't know how to just... receive this. I keep reaching for the pen to write my own failures, but You're holding it. You took the list I've been carrying and made it blank. I am declared okay. The verdict is not guilty, and it has nothing to do with me. Thank You. My hands are empty. My heart is catching up. I am free. Amen.
