Hebrews 6:19
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.”
The pillow is cool against your cheek. The house has finally gone quiet, but the world inside your head hasn't gotten the memo. Questions about tomorrow, regrets from yesterday, and the sheer weight of today's 'what-ifs' are doing laps behind your closed eyes. The ground beneath you feels less like solid earth and more like shifting sand, and you're bracing for the next tremor.
You don't need permission to feel unsteady. The sensation of being adrift isn't a sign you've failed to anchor yourself. It's just the honest weather of a soul in a stormy season. But the forecast isn't the final word. Here is what stands, unmoved by your internal weather: 'We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.' This isn't a metaphor you have to build. It's not a feeling you have to conjure. It's a declared fact. Your hope—your safe place, your home base—isn't a destination on a map you're desperately trying to chart a course toward. It's a person. A presence. An anchor that has already been dropped deep into a reality that doesn't shift, into an 'inner sanctuary' you're invited into, not because you fought your way past the curtain, but because the curtain was torn for you.
This anchor isn't just for calm seas. Its grip is most proven in the swell. Its purpose isn't to prevent the storm, but to hold you fast within it. Your soul has a home base that is already established, a belonging that is already secured. You are not trying to arrive somewhere. You are anchored where you need to be. The security you crave isn't a prize for getting your internal house in order. It's the foundation your house is built upon, whether you feel the solid ground or not. Your certainty doesn't come from your grip on life, but from life's unshakable grip on you.
So let the questions swirl. Let the feelings rise and fall. They don't define your position. You are held by a hope that enters the sacred, quiet place behind all the noise. The anchor is set. Your home is secure. You can stop bracing and simply be held in the firm, established grip of a love that will not let the storm have the final word.
A prayer for today
Naming it: this feeling of being untethered. Naming the truer thing: You are my anchor. God, my soul feels tossed tonight. The waves of worry and the winds of 'what next?' are real. I confess I've been looking for solid ground in my own plans, my own understanding, and finding only more shifting sand. But You speak a different word. You say my hope is already anchored—firm, secure. You say my home base in You is already established, finished, complete. So I am not searching tonight. I am resting. I am held. Thank You that my security was never my job to manufacture. It was Your promise to keep. My soul is safe. The work is done. Amen.
